YouTube Has Updated its Monetization Policy – Google owned video streaming website YouTube has updated its partner program and monetization policy. Now the company has raised the bar that a channel/creator must meet in order to monetize videos.
The policy is in place from immediate effect. As per the new guidelines, to apply for the monetization, creators must have tallied 4,000 hours of overall watch time on their channel within the past 12 months and have at least 1,000 subscribers. The new monetization policy guidelines will be made applicable for all existing channels as of February 20th, 2018. If a channel fails to meet the threshold, it won’t be able to monetize itself for regular incomes from the ads.

In past YouTube allowed users to join YouTube’s Partner Program if they had 10,000 public views, and it was without any specific requirement for annual viewing hours. With the changes in the policy now, it would be harder for new and smaller channels to reach monetization.
While announcing the updated monetization guidelines and partner program, the company said that they have decided to update the guidelines after thorough analysis and conversations with creators. They said that the changes would significantly improve YouTube’s ability to identify creators who contribute positively to the community and help drive more ad revenue to them. The company further added that these higher standards will also help YouTube prevent potentially inappropriate videos from monetizing.
